About the grape variety
Originally from a vast region that includes northeastern France and southeastern Germany, Savagnin Blanc is a very old grape variety, also known as Traminer, which has produced many natural offspring grapes including Sylvaner (Johannisberg in Valais), Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Grüner Veltliner.
In Switzerland, it is mentioned for the first time in 1586 in Upper Valais under the name of Heida, meaning very old and was translated into "paien" in Lower Valais, in reference to ancient times, before Christianity. An emblematic grape of Visperterminen (which culminates at an altitude of 1,000 metres above sea level), Heida has gradually moved down the Rhone valley. Its planted surface area is constantly increasing because Heida/Païen is a wine of great structure with good aging potential.
