Born in Isère (F) from a natural cross between Dureza from Ardèche and Mondeuse Blanche from Savoie, Syrah takes its name from the Latin serus (late), in reference to its maturity. Mentioned in 1781 in the Hermitage vineyard in the Rhône Valley, it was from there that it was introduced to Valais (Switzerland) in 1921 at the Domaine de l'Etat in Leytron. This Rhone river red has adapted particularly well to the dry, hot and windy climate of the largest Swiss wine region. In constant progression, this grape variety, which gives birth to generous and velvety wines, is beginning to establish itself in the best exposed plots of the Lake Geneva region. The majority of the vines are still today in Valais where Syrah gives wines of international stature.
Syrah gives a wine with a purple robe and racy tannins. It has beautiful notes of spices, black pepper and berries. Powerful and noble, the best vintages have an ageing potential of five to ten years.
Syrah is grown in several wine regions
